Anheuser-Busch Named to EPA Hall of Fame for Waste Reduction Efforts

(CSRwire) ST. LOUIS - In recognition of its impressive achievements in waste reduction, Anheuser-Busch on Tuesday was inducted into the WasteWise Hall of Fame by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Anheuser-Busch was honored for its longstanding commitment to waste reduction and recycling programs at its facilities and was one of only three inductees at the WasteWise 2005 Annual Conference, Oct. 24-25, in Washington, D.C.

"We are honored to be elected to the WasteWise Hall of Fame," said Doug Muhleman, group vice president, Brewing Operations and Technology, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. "This award reflects our employees' dedication and commitment to environmental excellence and innovation, and for that, we salute them for this achievement."

Since joining WasteWise as a charter member in 1994, Anheuser-Busch has received six WasteWise awards, including the 2004 WasteWise Partner of the Year. In addition, the company has achieved a recycling rate of more than 97 percent, while at the same time reducing landfill waste by 45 percent. Other highlights and achievements in waste reduction include:

  • Anheuser-Busch decreased the amount of paperboard used to produce its packaging by almost 21 million pounds since 2002;

  • The company is in the process of reducing its lid diameter, which is expected to save 20 million pounds of aluminum annually when fully implemented in 2006;

  • Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corporation, the company's recycling subsidiary, recycled 804 million pounds of aluminum beverage containers in 2004.

    WasteWise is a voluntary partnership program launched by the EPA in 1994. The program provides guidance and recognition to more than 1,800 participating organizations working to find practical methods to reduce municipal solid waste and improve financial performance. For more information about the program, visit the WasteWise website at www.epa.gov/wastewise.

    Anheuser-Busch's operations and resources are focused on beer, adventure parks and packaging. The company also has interests in aluminum beverage container recycling, malt production, rice milling, real estate development, turf farming, metalized paper label printing and transportation services. For more than 150 years, protecting the environment has been a core corporate value. As part of this commitment, Anheuser-Busch was one of the first corporations to nationally address the problems of litter and proper waste disposal. Today, the company is one of the world's largest recyclers of aluminum beverage cans. In addition, Anheuser-Busch's SeaWorld Adventure Parks rescue, rehabilitate and release more marine animals than anyone else.
