PotashCorp Pledges US $250,000 for Hurricane Katrina Relief
(CSRwire) Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc.
(PotashCorp) announced today that it is donating US $250,000 to aid with
humanitarian relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
"The human suffering and utter devastation of the larger Gulf Coast region
is a tragedy of enormous scale, and it is right in our own backyard," said
Bill Doyle, PotashCorp President and CEO. "This is about neighbors helping
neighbors in a time of desperate need and everyone in the community -
individuals, companies and governments - joining forces to offer support
and hope."
The employees of PotashCorp's plant at Geismar, Louisiana, 96 kilometers
(60 miles) northwest of New Orleans, are safe and escaped the hurricane
with only minor damage to some of their homes. The Geismar plant, a
500-acre complex that includes both nitrogen and phosphate production
areas, was briefly without power because of the storm but has resumed full
operations.
PotashCorp is consulting with its employees in Geismar to identify
charitable organizations effectively delivering relief to people most in
need, including those who have taken refuge in the Geismar area.
PotashCorp's contribution includes direct contributions of US $75,000 each
to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. PotashCorp will also match
donations made by employees.
Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. is the world's largest fertilizer
enterprise producing the three primary plant nutrients and a leading
supplier to three distinct market categories: agriculture, with the
largest capacity in the world in potash, third largest in phosphate and
fourth largest in nitrogen; animal nutrition, with the world's largest
capacity in phosphate feed ingredients; and industrial chemicals, as the
largest global producer of industrial nitrogen products and one of only
three North American suppliers of industrial phosphates.
