New ICMM Publication: ICMM Annual Review 2004 Released

(CSRwire) 2004 was a year of significant progress for ICMM. Our annual review presents our key achievements and shows how we have been implementing our sustainable development principles.

"We made some important strides in 2004, not least in the consolidation of our organisational priorities, work programme, and partnerships. Our work is becoming more widely recognised by governments, investors and commentators alike. This recognition is essential to encourage industry leaders to make the necessary investments to reap the rewards of sustainable development," said ICMM's Secretary General Paul Mitchell.

Some review highlights include:

  • Working with the Global Reporting Initiative, we produced a mining and metals sector reporting supplement. Our members agreed to report in accordance with the GRI's framework, and, as a result, we are now the largest industry group meeting their requirements.

  • We advanced two projects aiming to enhance our members' social and economic contributions to the countries where they operate. These are the Resource Endowment initiative and our Community Development Tools project, which look at issues at the national, regional and local level.

  • We have strengthened our collaboration with stakeholders, which is an essential part of our mission. We extended our dialogue with IUCN - The World Conservation Union to advance our work in biodiversity. We also established partnerships with the International Commission on Large Dams, the International Labour Organization, and the international trade union movement, ICEM.

  • We made good progress in preparing good practice guidance on biodiversity and materials stewardship, and in health and safety.

  • We launched a website on good practice in mining with two UN agencies, UNEP and UNCTAD, and the UK Department for International Development,
