Canada's Top Companies Honored for Environmental Excellence at Annual Globe Awards
(CSRwire) TORONTO, ON - Corporate leadership is the key to the long-term
"health" of our environment and our energy resources. Those companies who
create and implement sustainability plans not only benefit their bottom
line, they benefit the air we breath, the water we drink and our standard
of living. The 4th annual GLOBE Awards for Environmental Excellence
recognize those companies that have demonstrated environmental leadership
and a commitment to sustainable business strategies. The awards were
presented on May 27, 2005 in Toronto at the EECO Environment and Energy
Conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
The following are the winners of the 2005 Globe Awards for Environmental
Excellence:
The Corporate Competitiveness Award - Alcan Inc.
The Industry Association Award for Environmental Performance - The
Mining Association of Canada
The Corporate Award for Technology Innovation and Application -
RailPower Technologies Corporation
The Capital Markets Award for Sustainable Investment and Banking -
CleanTech Venture Network
The Award for Excellence in Brownfield Redevelopment - Canadian
Pacific Railway Company, Redevelopment of the Former Angus Shops in
Montreal
The Corporate Competitiveness Award is presented to a corporation
with a record of environmental leadership that has materially contributed
to economic competitiveness and demonstrated a commitment to environmental
excellence. Alcan Inc. is a multi-national, market-driven company
employing 70,000 people in 55 countries and regions worldwide. The Company
is a global leader in aluminum with world-class operations in primary
aluminum, fabricated aluminum as well as flexible and specialty packaging,
aerospace applications, bauxite mining and alumina processing. Alcan is
translating its sustainability commitments into concrete actions and
applications through Alcan's Integrated Management System (AIMS) and its
three key components: value-based management, EHS FIRST and Continuous
Improvement. AIMS links these initiatives and reinforces the focus of
managing for value for the entire Company.
The Company strives to optimize shareholder value while contributing to
social, environmental and economic value. Alcan has reduced its greenhouse
gas emissions (three million tonnes less of CO2 than in 1990) through the
re-use of bauxite residue and more innovative packaging. The Company works
towards more efficient power generation and promotes closed loop
manufacturing systems to promote water recycling. With leadership from
President and CEO Travis Engen, Alcan awarded its first Alcan
Sustainability Prize in 2004 by contributing US$1 million to the Forest
Stewardship Council for its work in forest management and conservation.
The Industry Association Award for Environmental Performance is
granted to an association that shows leadership by going beyond regulatory
compliance to develop a commitment to improved environmental performance
through research, development and education in partnership with
governments, NGOs, communities and stakeholders. In the past year, The
Mining Association of Canada (MAC) has launched its Towards Sustainable
Mining (TSM), a stewardship initiative that aims to sustain the industry's
role as a leading economic player by increasing public trust in its ability
to manage the environmental and social issues important to Canadians. TSM
includes clear performance indicators and targets in the areas of tailings
management, energy use, greenhouse gas management, external outreach and
crisis management.
RailPower Technologies Corporation, this year's winner of The
Corporate Award for Technology Innovation and Application, has
developed an innovation known as the Green Goat. The Green Goat is an
emission busting, fuel saving, hybrid locomotive for yard and branch line
switching. In comparison to a conventional diesel motor, the Green Goat
uses generation set/battery technology, similar to the automobile mobile
hybrid concept. With this technology, there is a 40 to 70 percent
reduction in diesel fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions and an 80 to 90
percent cut in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulates when in yard
service. This new innovation is in production for operation at companies
such as CP Rail, UP and railroads in the US. Licensing for international
markets is also underway.
A new category for this year's Globe Awards is the Capital Markets
Award for Sustainable Investment & Banking. This award identifies the
efforts financial markets are making to integrate environmental factors
into banking decisions and placing more capital into sustainable
technologies and ventures. The Cleantech Venture Network is an
organization that connects venture, corporate and institutional investors
with "clean technologyc entrepreneurs, through related information
products, online services and the Cleantech Venture Forum series of
events. The Cleantech Venture Network serves over 600 affiliate investor
member firms worldwide. They have tracked more than $3.5 billion invested
in cleantech ventures since 2002, of which nearly $300 million has been
raised by Forum-presenting companies.
The 2005 Globe Awards for Environmental Excellence present the Canadian
Pacific Railway Company the award for Excellence in Brownfield
Redevelopment for its revitalization of the former Angus Shops in
Montreal. The site became available for redevelopment in 1992. Over a
four-year period, CPR, along with advisors and consultants, began a
Site-Specific Risk Assessment (SSRA) to determine the best remediation
option. Working closely with the city, CPR established community advisory
groups and connected with local stakeholders. The Angus site was cleaned
up over a seven-year period primarily through soil remediation. It is now
now fully operational and represents a vibrant part of New Montreal.
Previous winners of the GLOBE Awards include Toyota Canada, Canadian Urban
Transit Association, Xantrex Technology Inc., and Carmanah Technologies
Inc. Businesses with a track record of environmental innovation can enter
the GLOBE Awards for Environmental Excellence.
The awards are sponsored by The Globe and Mail, Report on Business
Television, and the GLOBE Foundation of Canada. A panel of well-known
experts from the Canadian business community are responsible for judging
award submissions. For detailed awards information, please visit the Globe
Foundation website at www.theglobeawards.ca.
