Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT Survey Reveals Link Between Volunteering and Professional Success
Deloitte's IMPACT Day Demonstrates Helping Others Can Help Yourself
(CSRwire) NEW YORK - In an opinion poll released today by Deloitte & Touche
USA LLP, employed Americans overwhelmingly agree that volunteering in the
community can help them get ahead at work. According to the Deloitte
Volunteer IMPACT Survey, 86 percent of employed Americans said
volunteering can have a positive impact on their careers. Nearly four out
of five respondents (78 percent) see volunteering as an opportunity to
develop business skills including decision-making, problem-solving and
negotiating. And, of those respondents who serve on a nonprofit Board of
Directors, nearly three-quarters (73 percent) strongly agreed that
volunteering offers the opportunity to enhance leadership skills.
The findings support the case for corporate volunteer programs, which
according to the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National
Network, are increasingly being tied to business objectives. On June 3,
Deloitte's IMPACT Day, the organization will encourage its 30,000 people
nationwide to make a difference in the community by setting aside work for
the day to volunteer with nonprofits in their communities. Participation
in IMPACT Day has the added benefit of enhancing teamwork, leadership and
networking skills, as well as motivating others and achieving results.
"Communities rely on volunteer support and we all have a responsibility to
get involved," said James H. Quigley, CEO of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP.
"What we have seen at Deloitte, which is reinforced by the survey, is that
volunteering offers people a way to develop the skills they need to be
successful at work while making a contribution to their communities.
There is no question that volunteering is an outstanding professional
development tool because of the real experience it provides."
Key Survey Findings:
Eighty-eight percent of the respondents agreed that volunteering
helps enhance decision-making skills.
Eighty-two percent agreed that volunteering helps enhance negotiating
skills.
Eighty-nine percent agreed that volunteering helps enhance
problems-solving skills.
Ninety-three percent agreed that volunteering offers the opportunity
to enhance leadership skills
"Most people are well aware of the effect volunteering can have in our
communities," said Robert K. Goodwin, President and CEO of the Points of
Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network. "The results of
this survey indicate that people realize volunteering is mutually
beneficial not only on a personal level but also professionally, which is
important to the community, company, and employees. "
On Deloitte's IMPACT Day, the organization's people will work with more
than 300 nonprofit organizations to focus on community issues. In cities
across the country, including New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los
Angeles, Deloitte employees will address literacy and learning, mentor and
coach underprivileged students, offer direct assistance to the homeless,
revitalize and restore neglected public space, cheer up hospitalized
children and more.
"IMPACT Day is a reflection of our values and our overall commitment to
the community," said Quigley. "One of the reasons IMPACT Day is so
effective is because our people get as much from volunteering as they
give."
Goodwin noted that a number of companies set a strong example when it
comes to employee volunteer programs. "Deloitte is one organization that
really understands the importance of volunteering, and they are known for
giving their people the time to get out and give back. IMPACT Day is a
solid example of their commitment to service, " he added.
Opinion Research Corporation fielded the Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT survey
from March 17-22, 2005, via a telephone omnibus survey, interviewing a
nationwide sample of 1,093 adults who are employed full- or part-time,
living in private households in the continental United States. The survey
has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points for results
based on the entire sample.
Additional survey results are available upon request.
