Alcoa Recipient of First-Ever Corporate Park Achievement Award from U.S. National Parks Conservation Association for Land Preservation
(CSRwire) PITTSBURGH -Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced that it will be recognized
today by the National Parks Conservation Association based in Washington,
D.C. with the organization's first-ever Corporate Park Achievement Award.
Alcoa was bestowed the award for its work to permanently set aside 10,000
acres of land for preservation adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountain
National Park located in Tennessee.
Alcoa will receive the honor this evening in Washington, D.C. during the
NPCA's annual Salute to the Parks dinner event.
Alcoa worked with several organizations, including The Nature Conservancy
and NPCA, to craft a landmark agreement that prevents commercial
development near this portion of the Great Smoky Mountains and helps to
ensure the park's ecological protection.
Last October, President George W. Bush signed historical land exchange
legislation that enabled the preservation of the land along with the
relicensing of four Alcoa hydropower dams in Tennessee and North
Carolina.
"We are proud of having the distinction as the first winner of this
achievement award for support of one of our country's most visited
national parks. The innovative agreement that we are being recognized for
was a win-win for the NPCA, the Nature Conservancy and Alcoa. It is an
excellent example of joint environmental and conservation stewardship,"
said Kevin J. Anton, President, Alcoa Materials Management.
