1,000 Students From 29 School Districts Earn Free Home Computer This Fall; Dell TechKnow Graduation Rate Up 270 Percent Year-Over-Year
(CSRwire) ROUND ROCK, TX - Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) More than 1,000
middle-school students from 29 school districts nationwide graduated from
the Dell TechKnow program last fall, a 270 percent increase over the
previous year. The students earned a free Dell desktop computer they
learned to refurbish themselves.
The Dell TechKnow program enables low-income, middle-school students to
earn a free refurbished home computer and learn technology skills that can
promote self-esteem and academic success. The program also helps prepare
students for opportunities in today's technology-driven world.
Participating school districts for the Fall 2004 semester include:
California.: Alameda Unified School District
Colorado: Denver Public Schools
Florida: Miami-Dade County Public School
Georgia: Atlanta Public Schools
Illinois: Chicago Public Schools
Kentucky: Fayette County Public School
Louisiana: New Orleans Parish Public School
Michigan: Detroit Public Schools
North Carolina: Anson, Charlotte, Kannapolis, Montgomery County,
Richmond, Stanly and Union County Independent School Districts
Pennsylvania: York City, Bethlehem and Harrisburg City Independent
School Districts
Tennessee: Metro Nashville Public Schools, Wilson County Public
Schools
Texas: Austin, Alief, El Paso, Ft. Worth, Grape Creek, La Joya,
Laredo and Pampa Independent School Districts
Virginia: Norfolk Public Schools
"As a trusted partner in the education market, Dell wants to help
middle-school students build lifelong learning skills that prepare them
for opportunities in today's digital economy," said Karen Bruett, Dell's
director of education and community initiatives. "The Dell TechKnow
program accomplishes this by teaching children how computers work through
a unique after-school program in which the students take computers apart,
rebuild them and then take them home."
More than 4,660 students across the United States have completed the
program since its inception in July 2001. All students are defined as
"at-risk" or low-income; more than 80 percent of students participating in
the program are Hispanic and African American. About 45 percent of the
participating students are female.

The Dell TechKnow program is a 40-hour, self-paced, hands-on course.
Students in the Dell TechKnow program receive a free refurbished Dell
desktop computer and work in teams to learn computer basics. Students
learn how to take apart and re-build the computer, install software;
upgrade, diagnose and fix basic hardware problems; and how to use the word
processing and educational software. In addition, students must meet
certain program requirements such as attending school, demonstrating good
citizenship and sustaining or improving their grades.
Students in the program also learn important 21st-Century Skills such as
teamwork, collaboration and communications. Upon completion of the course,
students earn a refurbished Dell desktop computer, operating system and
software to take home and receive one-year Internet access at no charge
through a nationwide partnership with America Online or a variety of
