Nike Issues Statement Commending U.S. Surgeon General On Calling 2005 'The Year Of The Healthy Child'

(CSRwire) BEAVERTON OR - United States Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, on Tuesday, January 11, announced the 2005 agenda for the Office of the Surgeon General. He called 2005 "The Year of the Healthy Child" and said that, throughout the course of the year, he will look at a number of different issues surrounding the health and well being of children throughout the nation and the world.

Nike, Inc., through its signature community affairs program NikeGO (www.NikeGo.com), the mission of which is to inspire kids to lead physically active lives, and participation in Shaping America's Youth (www.shapingamericasyouth.org), has worked closely with the Office of the Surgeon General.

Today the company issued the following statement in support of 2005 as "The Year of the Healthy Child":

"We commend Surgeon General Carmona for calling 2005 'The Year of the Healthy Child,'" said Gary DeStefano, President of Nike US Operations. "We believe the Surgeon General's focus on all our children can be his legacy, and have particularly appreciated his attention on issues of youth physical inactivity. We believe the time is now for a National Action Plan on issues of youth physical inactivity and look forward to working with him towards these ends."
