20 Million People Wear Yellow, Live Strong
(CSRwire) AUSTIN, TX - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today
that more than 20 million LIVESTRONGTM wristbands have now been purchased.
The Wear Yellow Live Strong campaign, a LAF and Nike partnership, was
launched last May in an effort to raise funds for LAF programs that help
people with cancer live strong.
"I am only one of more than 10 million Americans living with and beyond
cancer, so there are at least 10 million reasons why I wear my Live Strong
wristband everyday," said Lance Armstrong, champion cyclist, cancer
survivor and founder of the LAF. "I think the color yellow stands for
hope and courage and inspiration and that's why I'm never taking my
wristband off."
Wristbands have been sold to citizens of all 50 states and more than 60
countries. Since the launch of the campaign, wristbands have been spotted
on a number of athletes, Olympians, musicians, actors and political
leaders.
Strong demand for the yellow wristbands continues. The LAF currently
sells approximately 150,000 wristbands every day exclusively at www.laf.org and www.wearyellow.com.
The LAF's most recent record-breaking sales day occurred on September 20,
when the LAF sold 382,000 wristbands in one day. Wristbands are sold for
$1 in packs of 10, 100 and 1,200. Due to overwhelming demand for
wristbands, orders generally ship to customers in approximately three to
four weeks. The LAF has ordered more wristbands in order to reduce the
shipping delay.
Next month, the LAF and Nike will begin distributing LIVESTRONG wristbands
for sale at all Niketown locations, nikewomen stores and Niketown outlets.
Discovery Communications will also sell wristbands at its nationwide chain
of more than 120 Discovery Channel Stores.
As a tribute to Armstrong's inspirational fight against cancer as well as
his historic attempt to break the Tour de France record, the LAF and Nike
launched the Wear Yellow Live Strong campaign on May 17, 2004. Nike
donated $1 million to the Foundation and led efforts to raise additional
millions of dollars through the sale of yellow wristbands engraved with
Lance's mantra, Live Strong. All proceeds benefit LAF programs that help
people with cancer live strong.
For Lance and many people living with cancer, yellow is the color of hope,
courage, inspiration and perseverance. LIVESTRONG wristbands allow
everyone to share that spirit - especially the 10 million people living
with cancer in the U.S.
The LAF is thrilled about the success of the campaign. Funds raised
through wristband sales will benefit the LAF's advocacy, education, public
health and research programs.
