UPS Begins Week of Synchronized Community Service Around the Globe
(CSRwire) ATLANTA - This week, UPS employees will deliver much more than
packages - they will dedicate their time and talents to serving their
communities as part of the second annual UPS Global Volunteer Week.
More than 3,500 UPS employees will roll up their sleeves to help build
houses in the Philippines, read to hospitalized children in Argentina and
Nigeria, and work in food banks in Belgium, among many other activities.
UPS employees in 35 countries, from the China to the Czech Republic, will
volunteer more than 13,000 hours in community service this week. This is
triple the number of volunteer hours employees gave during the inaugural
Global Volunteer Week last year.
"As a company that works directly in communities all around the world, we
have a responsibility to give back through community service," said David
Abney, President of UPS International. "This volunteer week is an
important opportunity for employees to help those who need it most."
UPS started Global Volunteer Week in 2003 to extend the company's legacy
of volunteerism. In the United States, more than 30,000 employees are
involved in the company's Neighbor to Neighbor program, which provides
volunteer opportunities through UPS's charitable arm, The UPS Foundation.
"We are in the community every day," said Abney. "We're in every town and
every village. We drive down every street. We knock on the doors and see
the hungry, the homeless, the undereducated. Our community is developing
our future leaders. It's up to us to help make a better future."
Global Volunteer Week projects were chosen by UPS employees in each
participating country. The following are just a few examples of the
volunteer tasks:
In Mexico, employees will volunteer 1,500 hours to plant trees for a
reforestation project.
In Spain, UPS employees will spend 400 hours working at a food
bank.
In India, employees will spend 700 hours working with underprivileged
children and senior citizens providing mentoring, cleaning and
landscaping.
In Canada, employees will volunteer 3,200 hours in a wide variety of
activities from sorting food at food banks to building a house with
Habitat for Humanity.
UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in
supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for
synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds. Headquartered
in Atlanta, Ga., UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories
worldwide. UPS's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange (UPS), and
the company can be found on the Web at www.UPS.com.
