United Technologies Corp. Launches Initiative Supporting Environmentally Sustainable Cities and Neighborhoods
(CSRwire) HARTFORD, CT - United Technologies Corp.(NYSE:UTX) today unveiled a
Sustainable Cities initiative supporting the development and use of green
building practices in urban centers, creating new programs to educate the
public about the need for healthier environments, and protecting natural
resources nationwide
UTC announced the initiative at the EPA Climate Leaders Partners meeting
held in Farmington, Conn. The two-day conference drew corporate and
governmental officials to address such environmental concerns as
greenhouse gas emissions and water quality. UTC began planning the
Sustainable Cities initiative a year ago.
Under the new corporate philanthropy program, UTC has awarded $350,000 in
first-year grants to national and Connecticut programs and plans to
increase that to $500,000 next year.
"UTC companies have given rise to the modern city with elevators made by
Otis and air-conditioners made by Carrier. We believe successful companies
improve the human condition, and the new Sustainable Cities program builds
on that commitment," said Krista Pilot, UTC's director of community
affairs.
Organizations awarded grants include:
National Trust for Historic Preservation, $55,000 for a pilot project
to help apply green building principles into historic preservation at the
President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C.
Habitat for Humanity NYC/Global Green USA, $55,000 for the "Green
Building and Environment Justice" conference to train representatives of
the regional Habitat affiliates in the best practices of green
building.
U.S. Green Building Council, $25,000 to support the creation of a
regional chapter in New England.
In addition to the national programs, UTC is awarding $110,000 in grants
to organizations in Connecticut, UTC's home state.
United Technologies Corp., based in Hartford, Connecticut, is a
diversified company that provides a broad range of high technology
products and support services to the building systems and aerospace
industries.
