UPS Garners Top Honors For Diversity Leadership
(CSRwire) ATLANTA -- In just the first four months of 2004, UPS (NYSE:UPS) has
received top honors from several prominent organizations for its commitment
to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace.
UPS recently ranked No. 32 on DiversityInc magazine's "Top 50
Companies for Diversity" and also was listed among Hispanic
magazine's "Corporate 100." Additionally, two of UPS's leading Latina
executives - Jovita Carranza and Ana Guevara - were recognized by
Hispanic Business magazine and the World Trade Center of Miami,
respectively, for their professional and personal accomplishments.
In addition to being listed as No. 32 on DiversityInc's "Top 50
Companies for Diversity," UPS also was ranked No. 7 by the magazine as one
of the "Top 10 Companies for Latinos." DiversityInc's annual survey
is based on a rigorous set of metrics for evaluating diversity. Companies
provide data on four key areas: CEO commitment, human capital, corporate
communications (internal and external) and supplier diversity.
"Managing diversity is a competitive factor for any business, from sales
and marketing, to recruiting and retaining the best talent," said Luke
Visconti, partner and co-founder, DiversityInc. "UPS's strong
showing demonstrates its national leadership in diversity, especially in
its programs for Latinos, the largest minority group in the United
States."
In its April issue, Hispanic Business magazine named Jovita
Carranza, vice president of Air Operations for UPS, as the 2004 Woman of
the Year. In her current role, Carranza oversees the management of UPS
Worldport, a state-of-the-art, 4 million-square-foot air facility in
Louisville, Ky. A UPS employee since 1976, Carranza has held several
management positions within the company and was the first female in UPS's
history to preside over an international region. Carranza is the
highest-ranking Latina at UPS.
In February, the World Trade Center Miami named UPS's Ana Guevara, vice
president of public affairs for the Americas, to its inaugural group of
women honored to commemorate International Women's Day. Nine female
executives were selected for this honor based on their leadership in
promoting free trade and international business in the Americas.
With employees in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide, UPS
promotes a culture of inclusiveness, respect and cooperation. UPS has one
of the most diverse workforces of any company, with minorities making up
more than one-third of the company's approximately 317,000 U.S. employees.
Among the company's U.S. managers, minorities hold more than 28 percent of
those 53,000 executive positions. Hispanics hold nearly 10 percent.
At the corporate level, UPS has long-standing partnerships with groups
that support and advocate equal opportunity, including the National Urban
League, National Council of La Raza, National Council of Women,
Organization of Chinese Americans, Japanese American Citizen League and
the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. UPS also is an active member of
the National Minority Supplier Development Council.
UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in
supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for
synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds. Headquartered
in Atlanta, Ga., UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories
worldwide. UPS's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange (UPS), and
the company can be found on the Web at UPS.com.
