Motorola Donates Equipment and Money to Help China Fight SARS
(CSRwire) BEIJING - Motorola, a global leader in integrated communications and
the largest foreign investor in China, today donated RMB11.8 million worth
of communications equipment and employee donations to China in support of
the effort to combat the spread of SARS.
"At Motorola, the safety and welfare of our employees, their families and
the communities in which we live and work, are of paramount importance,"
said Mike Zafirovski, president and chief operating officer, Motorola.
Zafirovski is in Beijing to reassure authorities, employees and customers
of Motorola's commitment to them during these challenging times.
The donation ceremony was held in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. Resources
donated by Motorola will be mainly delivered to the Logistic Guarantee
Group under the National SARS Control and Prevention Headquarters.
Included in the RMB11.8 million are the previously announced Motorola
equipment and resources worth RMB2.92 million as well as donations worth
RMB 5 million recently raised from local and foreign staff in the
company.
"The generous donation from Motorola and its employees give us great
support in resources as well as spirit in our fight against SARS. This
represents a fine model for all the foreign enterprises in China," said Ou
Xinqian, Vice Chairman of National Development and Reform Commission. "The
fact that Mr. Mike Zafirovski made a long trip to China during this
difficult time is evidence of Motorola's confidence in China's economy as
well as Motorola's commitment to business development in China. This
confidence is based on Motorola's deep rooted investment in China and its
close cooperation and partnership with the Chinese government and
enterprises."
"My presence here demonstrates both Motorola's concern for its employees
as well as our confidence in China's ability to fight the spread of SARS.
Motorola has been a trusted corporate citizen in China since 1987," said
Zafirovski. "We have answered the call whenever a community needs our
expertise in times of crisis. We plan to continue with that
commitment."
Mr. Zafirovski also signed a MOU with the China government pledging that
Motorola will invest US$90 million to establish a research company in
Beijing. The research company is expected to spend US$500 million in human
resources and equipment within five years. "China is an important market
for Motorola worldwide as well as a manufacturing base and research center
for the company," Zafirovski noted.
Zafirovski also met with Motorola customers and employees while in China
and reiterated the company's pledge to continue partnering with them to
find ways to deliver the products and services that help people
communicate more efficiently. "This year is the 75th anniversary of
Motorola in China. Motorola has been a pioneer in communications
