AT&T Funds Great Swamp Intern Program
(CSRwire) BEDMINSTER, NJ - AT&T will provide funding for two members of the
Intern Program at the Great Swamp National Refuge in Basking Ridge, N.J.,
continuing support that the company has provided for the last six years.
AT&T's contribution will provide housing and a weekly stipend for 12 weeks
this summer. The program provides a unique opportunity for 18 students
from across the country to live and work on a National Wildlife Refuge.
Refuge manager, William Koch stated, "By generously funding the intern
program at the Great Swamp National Wildlife refuge, the AT&T Environment,
Health and Safety Organization has not only provided an opportunity for
college students to work on a national wildlife refuge, but they have also
contributed to the preservation and maintenance of our natural resources.
In addition, AT&T's employees continue to personally volunteer at the
refuge year after year. This year our interns will also be helping in
celebrating the National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial by assisting in
the many planned events at this refuge. We are very appreciative of AT&T's
support of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge."
Students awarded the internship are typically pursuing a career in the
environmental sciences, but the internship is not limited to people
enrolled in a degree program. Many opportunities for further learning are
available to an intern on the refuge. Each season the interns aid the
refuge staff with various biological surveys and management activities,
including control of invasive plant species such as purple loose-strife
and conducting a Great Blue Heron survey.
In addition to these seasonal duties, previous interns have developed
individual projects. Intern projects have included professional quality
computer presentations on various aspects of the Great Swamp Refuge,
updating the Refuge bird list, conducting interpretive walks, assisting in
biological studies, waterfowl banding and developing new exhibits.
Students interested in applying for the two intern positions this summer
should contact Tom McFadden at (973) 425-1222 ext.14 for more information.
