Imperial Oil Releases its Latest Corporate Citizenship Report
(CSRwire) CALGARY,CANADA. - October 15, 2008 - Imperial Oil today announced
that it has released its most recent Corporate Citizenship Report.
The eighth such report published by the company focuses on key topics of
climate change, spill prevention, water management, worker safety,
stakeholder engagement and community investment, and covers the 2007 to
early 2008 timeframes.
"As the global focus on Canadian energy development grows, more people in
the world will be watching our performance as a corporate citizen," said
Bruce March, Imperial Oil's chairman, president and CEO. "Our company must
achieve very high standards of environmental and social performance. As
this report shows, our company is up for the challenge."
Some significant highlights from the report include: - The
company's total greenhouse gas emissions were reduced 2 percent from 2006
levels.
- Spills greater than one barrel were reduced to 17 from 34 in 2006.
- Since 2003, the lost-time incident rates for employees and contractors
have decreased by 33 percent and 85 percent,respectively.
- In 2007, the company commercialized a solvents-based recovery
method
at the Cold Lake operation that will enhance efficiencies and improve
environmental performance. This work was the result of the company's
ongoing investment in research and technology. In 2007, this investment
totaled $83 million.
- In 2007, $11.3 million was contributed to more than 440 community
initiatives across Canada.
- In 2007, the company continued to solicit public and community
input
into its plans for the Kearl oil sands project and the Mackenzie gas
project. The report has been produced using the Oil and Gas Industry
Guidance on Voluntary Sustainability Reporting, published jointly by the
American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Petroleum
Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA). The API/IPIECA
guidance provides a common framework for the petroleum industry to use in

Imperial Oil is one of Canada's largest corporations and a leading member
of the country's petroleum industry. It is one of the country's largest
producers of crude oil and natural gas, is the largest petroleum refiner,

coast-to-coast supply network that includes about 1,900 service stations.
