Shanks And Wheelabrator Announce A Cooperation Agreement To Bid

Project works toward Waste Management's goal of doubling its amount of renewable energy produced by 2020

(CSRwire) HAMPTON, N.H. - July 7, 2008 - Shanks and Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. today announced the signing of a cooperation agreement to provide a waste to energy (WTE) solution to local authorities in the United Kingdom that have made the decision to procure mass burn WTE facilities to address their residual waste disposal needs.

"We are delighted to be working in partnership with Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. We believe the widening of our technology offering in the private finance initiative (PFI) market not only satisfies the needs of a number of local authorities but also complements our Ecodeco MBT Solution," said Ian F Goodfellow, managing director, Shanks UK.

Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc. -- the largest environmental services company in North America -- is a recognized market leader in the design, construction and operation of waste to energy and independent power facilities, with 21 facilities across North America.

"We are very pleased to be teaming with Shanks, a recognized leader in the European waste sector," said Mark A. Weidman, President of Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. "The combination of Shanks' established position in the industry and Wheelabrator's 35 years of proven WTE experience offer a unique and competitive solution for the UK market. This project will also help us work toward Waste Management's goal of doubling the amount of renewable energy produced by the year 2020."

Shanks' experience in the UK waste PFI sector coupled with Wheelabrator's track record in energy from waste will deliver an innovative and affordable WTE solution for local authorities.
