Major League Baseball Supports Veterans
And Selected USA Cares to Support Military Families
(CSRwire) RADCLIFF, KY,. - June 18, 2008 - Major League Baseball Charities teamed
with the Advertising Council to create a special website called,
"WELCOMEBACKVETERANS.ORG". Its purpose is to educate Americans on the
problems faced by Veterans who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, as well
as to encourage American's to support our troops. USA Cares is proud to be
one of six organizations chosen by Major League Baseball as a recipient of
the on-line and direct contributions made by baseball fans from across our
Country.
From the office of the Commissioner of Baseball came a letter written by
Mr. Thomas C. Brasuell, Vice President of Community Affairs. It was
addressed to USA Cares, Inc. Radcliff, KY and included "Thank you for your
support in assisting these brave men and women make a successful transition
to civilian life." A check in the amount of $5,777.33 was also enclosed.
Bill Nelson, Executive Director of USA Cares, noted "America has always
cherished baseball as its National pastime and it is particularly
noteworthy to see that baseball recognizes our Military Heroes. It seems
to be a reflection of mutual admiration, appreciation and respect." He
went on to add, "Although it was slightly out of our charter, our
Operation Slugger efforts sent more than fourteen tons of baseball gear to
the Service Members on duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since they couldn’t
be in the stands at their favorite Major League Baseball venue, they could
still play the game during any time that they were not on duty."
USA Cares National Spokesman, Dennis Miller, commented on his national
radio program, "A big tip of the ball cap to Major League Baseball" and
mentioned the amount of the check and thanked the fans by saying "...for
supporting those groups who help our troops and their families! I can tell
you that my outfit, USA Cares, will use the fan's contributions to help our
military families financial needs such as paying some overdue bills, saving
a mortgage or assisting a wounded Veteran."
