Newmont Mining is Founding Reporter of The Climate Registry
Industry Leader Takes Action on Climate Change
(CSRwire) WASHINGTON, DC – May 22, 2008 - Newmont Mining Corporation, one of the
world's largest gold producers, has become a Founding Reporter of The
Climate Registry (www.theclimateregistry.org)
and is among the first 100 to join the organization.
The Climate Registry is a non-profit organization established to measure
and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in a common, accurate
and transparent manner consistent across industry sectors and borders.
Thirty nine U.S. states, eight Canadian provinces, three Native American
tribes, six Mexican states and the District of Columbia founded the
organization.
"Newmont has demonstrated exemplary environmental leadership by
courageously stepping forward to embrace The Climate Registry in its
preliminary stages. We are deeply grateful for their help in and
commitment to addressing the challenge of global climate change," said
Gina McCarthy, Chair of The Climate Registry.
A pioneer in the gold mining industry, Newmont has demonstrated
environmental stewardship on several fronts by voluntarily committing to
measure, independently verify, and publicly report their greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions on an annual basis utilizing The Climate Registry General
Reporting Protocol. The protocol is based on the internationally
recognized GHG measurement standards of the World Resources Institute and
World Business Council on Sustainability.
"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges confronting our planet
and state," said Colorado Governor Bill Ritter. "The participation of
Colorado companies such as Newmont in the Climate Registry lays the
foundation for concrete actions to reduce our greenhouse gas
emissions."
One of the world's largest gold producers, Newmont is the only gold
company listed in the S&P 500 index and in the Dow Jones Sustainability
Index-World.
"Newmont's vision to become The Gold Company of Choice through industry
leading performance compels us to support and participate in The Climate
Registry," said Newmont President and CEO, Richard O'Brien. "By choosing
to be a Founding Member of The Climate Registry we are practicing our core
value of demonstrating leadership in environmental management and
sustainable development."
Newmont was established in 1921 and has been publicly traded on the NYSE
since 1925. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the company has
approximately 30,000 employees and contractors, the majority of who work
at Newmont's core operations in the United States, Australia, Peru,
Indonesia, and Ghana. Newmont's industry-leading performance is reflected
through high standards in environmental management, employee health and
safety and creating value and opportunity for host communities and
shareholders. The company's sustainability report can be viewed at www.BeyondTheMine.com.
Entities joining The Climate Registry before May 2008 receive Founding
Reporter status.
