Pepsi Center in Denver Goes 100% Green with Sterling Planet's Renewable Energy
Kroenke Sports Enterprises Teams with Sterling Planet, Signs Multi-Year Purchase Agreement
(CSRwire) ATLANTA, GA - March 26, 2008 – Sterling Planet, a leading supplier of
renewable energy, energy efficiency and low-carbon solutions, today
announced a partnership that positions the Pepsi Center in Denver as the
first major sports and entertainment arena to go 100% green with a
multi-year renewable energy purchase.
Sterling Planet will supply Kroenke Sports Enterprises (KSE), owner of
Pepsi Center, more than 11,000 renewable energy megawatt hours each year.
The purchase matches 100% of the facility’s annual electricity use from
conventional sources of electricity.
The 19,000-seat Pepsi Center is the home of the NBA Denver Nuggets, NHL
Colorado Avalanche, NLL Colorado Mammoth and AFL Colorado Crush. The arena
hosts more than 200 sporting events and concerts a year and is the site of
the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
"This greenup is part of a broad environmentally friendly makeover for
Pepsi Center,' said Dave Jolette, KSE Vice President of Venue Operations.
"We've identified many ways to conserve energy, recycle materials and
reduce the building’s environmental footprint. And this is just the
beginning. This is a sustained, ongoing effort to protect the
environment."
Renewable energy is a key part of the makeover, from installing 52 rooftop
solar panels to matching all the arena's electricity use with renewable
energy certificates (RECs). The RECs provided by Sterling Planet represent
enough electricity to power 1,155 average U.S. homes for a year. Use of
these RECs avoids the release of 8,724 metric tons of carbon dioxide
equivalent emissions per year. The environmental benefits compare to
taking 1,600 passenger vehicles off the road for a year or not burning
990,000 gallons of gasoline.
"Renewable energy has already become mainstream in this country, and this
high-profile greenup of a premier sports and entertainment complex
underscores the viability of renewable energy," said Mel Jones, Sterling
Planet President and CEO. "We applaud KSE for its vision and leadership
in raising the bar for corporate social responsibility."
Sterling Planet's Green America(TM) RECs are certified by the Green-e
Energy program of the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS), which ensures
the highest levels of authenticity and transparency and the satisfaction
of stringent environmental guidelines. CRS is a national non-profit
organization working to promote sustainable resource solutions that reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.

compares to taking 2.2 million cars off the road for a year. www.sterlingplanet.com
