Author Larry Nocella Offsets His Novel's Environmental Impact with Carbonfund.org
(CSRwire) PHILADELPHIA, PA - December 19, 2007 – Carbonfund.org and author Larry
Nocella today announced that Nocella is offsetting the
carbon emissions resulting from the production of his novel, "Where
Did This Come From?" Readers of the book will help reduce 17 metric tons
of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere caused by the book's production, or
slightly less than the amount the average American is responsible for in a
year.
Nocella has also committed to donating a portion of the profit from each
copy of "Where Did You Come From?" sold to Carbonfund.org reforestation
projects. This commitment places Larry Nocella as an environmental
leader in the independent publishing community and demonstrates proactive
steps being taken in the fight against global climate change.
"I've always believed that we should tread as lightly as possible on the
earth. That’s evident in the themes of my novel. I've always been
disappointed that other publications advocating environmental stewardship
make seemingly little effort to account for their paper usage and
shipping," Nocella said. “Publishers can be a positive force by
exploring less wasteful book production and distribution models. I hope to
lead by example. I encourage ALL authors and publishers to build market
demand for recycled materials and offset the carbon released by their
products. The friendly and helpful staff at Carbonfund.org make it
easy."
"We're extremely pleased that Larry has decided to offset production of
his book with us," Carbonfund.org Executive Director Eric Carlson said.
"'Where Did This Come From?' explores themes of a consumer-driven culture
that is sorely in need of education as to the impact their purchasing
decisions have on the planet we all share."
Larry Nocella's first novel, "Where Did This Come From?" is based in the
fictional South American nation of Palagua, and follows the Huapi tribe's
desperate struggle for survival. When a leading U.S. toy manufacturer
discovers a rare and beautiful crystal on the Huapi's sacred land, mining
operations begin immediately. Christmas shopping season is coming, and
toys made from the crystal are phenomenal sellers. Soon the Huapi find
themselves and the jungle that supports mined to the brink of
annihilation. Can they hope to resist the desire of consumers who never
bother to ask, "Where did this come from?"
